We’ll complete digital registration of Nigerians by 2024 – NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Monday, November 4, said that the digital registration of all Nigerians will be completed by 2024.

The commission said that unique identities have bee provided for about 38 million out of over 187 million Nigerians across the country.

Speaking at the pre-bid conference for the Prospective Data Collection Service Providers, in Abuja, the director general of the commission, Aliyu Aziz, said all legal residents of the country will be captured within five years.

Aziz said all Nigerians including children under the age of 18-years are mandated to go through the process of capturing.

He said the National Identity Number (NIN) is a prerequisite for the registration of every Nigerian resident.

“Identity is one of the key points under the United Nations Development Goals, whereby each country is expected to ensure that they identify their citizens and legal residents within a particular period,” Aziz said.

Also speaking, the deputy general manager, Uche Chigo said with NIN, the government would be able to determine the living people in the country.

Chigo also said that all children under the age of 16-years will be registered with their parents or guardians.

“But the child’s biometrics will be tied to his or her parent biometrics until the child turns 16 years when he or she can now come for the biometric capturing,’’ Chigo said.

Nigerians stating that they do not want any form of trouble with the military said they will oblige with the during the exercise Operation Positive Identification.
